Hi, I'm Carl Richards...
It seems that throughout my life I’ve been dispelling myths!
As a 5 year old, I was a really, really bad stutterer!!!
In fact, I almost stopped speaking. Every time I stuttered, I still remember my parent saying: Carl, stop and start again!
By the time I got to school, I felt alone, ashamed and stupid every single time I opened my mouth. I remember cringing every time it was ‘read out loud’ time in class!
Even by the time I was a young teenager, things had not improved substantially. One particular occasion, I was asked to read a passage from the Bible in front of our rather large congregation. It was one of my most embarrassing moments as I struggled through the passage. Finally, the minister came to my side, and confidently placed his hand on my shoulder and I was able to continue.
Later, my parents were able to pay for speech therapy for me. It was during speech therapy that I learned, my stutter wasn’t as bad as many others in the program. But speaking was still embarrassing.

MYTH #1 – A former stutterer could not become a radio broadcaster?!
I was finally able to dispel my first myth #1 as a young employed man. I conquered my stuttering and became…. Yes wait… a radio broadcaster. And not for one year but a 25 year career!!
I won’t say that I didn’t have my moments of embarrassment, I did. But I soon learned that “The only one in control of your speech is you! “ Bam!

MYTH #2 – A former stutterer winning speaking competitions??
Yup – it’s true. I joined Toastmasters to help improve my speaking and won many competitions against world class speakers! Myth #2 dispelled. Bam!
MYTH #3 – A former stutterer teaching business owners how to improve their speaking skills??
YUP. For several years while I was a broadcaster, I had a side gig teaching business owners how to be a better public speaker! Bam!!!
So here’s the thing….
